As soon as Bella received the page that Dave had been rushed to the ER, she just took off. She had been sitting with Rick, just as she promised, and when the page had come through the beeping of it had woken Rick but all she could do was apologise to him, promise he would be moved to his hospital room ASAP and then she bolted to the ER. It was just a rush of directions and orders, then. She managed to talk briefly to Dave about his wishes and although he was very groggy, he told her that she had to tell anyone if it came up. He didn't want her to have to lie for him. Of course it came up. Both Chris and Proctor were waiting for news on Dave's condition, so she had no choice but to tell them about the diagnosis. They both looked terribly shocked and Bella couldn't blame them at all. but she hadn't been able to stick around to elaborate. Dave was still drifting in and out of consciousness and still vomiting blood, but she did manage to get out of him that he had spent the last two days experiencing intense vomiting bouts, but nothing like this.

The scope showed a mild gastritis... )

It was one of the worst emotional rollercoasters Chris had ever been on, and he wanted off. It seemed like every time he just got to a tolerable place in his head, something twisted and turned, pulling the rug out from under him all over again. It had felt like he had lost the ability to think straight; that everything flooding through his brain that he was trying to slot into all the right places had broken him and it wasn’t a feeling he was coping well with experiencing. He didn’t profess to have had an easy life, and although on the face of it, he appeared to be easygoing and just chilling his way through life, that was hardly the truth beyond the masks he so easily kept up. He got upset and hurt just like everyone else did. In fact, he really wished he had reached his quote of hurt because he wasn’t sure how much more he could take.

Serena dropping Bella’s bombshell on him could never have been something he could have expected, let alone prepared for. Making the decision to not give Rick one of his kidneys had been the hardest thing in his life he had to consider. He had originally been so sure he would do it, but when push came to shove, he just panicked and he got terrified. Maybe a few weeks ago he would have just gone in like a white knight and done it without question. Just like day with the sinkhole. There had been no question then that he needed to go down that hole and save the guy, and when it came to light that Rick might need a kidney transplant, Chris had been just as confident about that. But for the first time in his life, he was chillingly terrified of what might happen if he gave up a kidney and there were complications. He could die, he could lose functions, he might never be fit enough to be a trauma surgeon again and he came to the realisation that trauma surgery was his life. He lived and breathed it and if he couldn’t do that, he wasn’t sure what he would do.

The thing that sealed the deal, however, was Serena... )

Bella couldn't believe how long this day felt and it wasn't even lunch time. She was at the nurses' station in the Oncology ward in her scrubs following two small surgeries early that morning for biopsies, but the way she had been feeling only succeeded in making the day feel like it was dragging. When she woke up, Aaron had been sitting on her sofa huddled up under a blanket still looking like death warmed up, though apparently the puking had eased off. It was still early at that point, and after making him promise to call her later with a gut update, she left for work. She just had to wonder if what he had was somehow catching because her own stomach had been churning uncomfortably since she woke up. It didn't feel like it was going to let up anytime soon, either, but she palmed it off to not getting enough sleep after letting her mind go into overdrive following the mess with Rick the evening before.

In all honesty, she hadn't expected him to be able to perform... )

It was around nine at night when the buzzer at Chris’ apartment door sounded. He couldn’t deny that he was surprised to hear it. A large part of him didn’t think it would happen. He knew it wasn’t Serena, she had a key and definitely wouldn’t ring the buzzer anymore. They had stopped ringing each other’s buzzers awhile ago now. Chris had been standing in his kitchen, looking out at the view of the beach in the distance while he waited for the kettle to boil. It had been a long day and draining day, and he didn’t think it was about to end any time soon. Rick’s chemo had started out okay on the face of it. In fact, he seemed to be tolerating it okay through the whole administration of it. He was fine when the central line was inserted, and seemed to stay fine as the drug entered his system, even feeling okay enough to tease Chris about overhearing him having sex with Serena in the middle of the previous night when he went to the bathroom.

It lulled Chris into a false sense of security, to say the least... )

It was standard practice for any post-op patients having important body parts removed be put in the ICU for a day or so to monitor their condition. Chris had demanded Rick have a private room, though, and even though the unit was busy at that point, Bella was able to see his demands were catered to. Private was a bit of a stretch of the description, though. It was still an intensive care unit, and the room had glass walls. Every patient on that ward could be in direct line of sight from the nurses' station. It was as private as they were going to get. Bella stood over Rick's hospital bed, leaning over the railings that were still up from the trip down from Recovery. "Rick?" she said, raising her voice a little and giving his shoulder a soft squeeze to try and rouse him. He had been awake, yet groggy in Recovery, and probably had no recollection of it, but now he was back on the ward, she wanted to make sure he was okay before she left. "Come on, Rick. It's time to wake up," she coaxed again, carefully adjusting the oxygen prongs in his nose and removing his surgical cap.

When she saw his eyes opening a little, she smiled down at him... )
